  • Description

In Iran, a time bomb has exploded in a bazaar, in the southern city of Khorramshahr, killing one person and injuring thirty-five. The incident was the latest in a series of bomb attacks which have been blamed on local Arabs campaigning for a separate state.

SYNOPSIS: The time bomb went off at eight-thirty in the morning of Friday (5 October) -- as hundreds of shoppers thronged the bazaar to do their week-end shopping. the explosion appeared with the peak business hour -- and to cause maximum injury and damage.

Khorramshahr is an important southern port and forms part of Iran's economic nerve center. Earlier this year, the city was the scene of bitter fighting between Iranian government militiamen and Arab activists, who are seeking autonomy in the south. Recently violence has been on the increase. Tow days before the blast at the bazaar (3 october) a similar device exploded aboard a passenger train outside Khorramshahr. Eight people were burned to death.

In the nearby oilfields of Khuzestan, eight people were executed recently by firing squad. They were accused of sabotaging railway lines.

Of the thirty-five injured in the explosion at Khorramshahr Bazaar, several were in a serious condition in the local hospital. Iran's official radio has blamed the continuing violence on 'enemies of the islamic Revolution' and more specifically on Arab separatist groups. In recent months, security forces have combed Iran's southern provinces, carrying out a wave of arrests. Many of those apprehended have ended up facing a firing squad and among them have been members of local Arab ethnic groups who are fighting for an independent state in the South. But the widespread clamp down has failed to halt the violence.
