Background: THERE WERE MORE DEMONSTRATIONS IN LONDON TODAY (MONDAY) AGAINST UNITED STATES POLICY IN VIETNAM. AT THE AMERICAN EMBASSY, WHERE THEY WERE CELEBRATING INDEPENDENCE DAY, A PACIFIST TRIED TO RIP UP THE STARS AND STRIPES. ANOTHER LAY ON THE PAVEMENT, AND WHEN HE WAS DETAINED BY POLICE, A THIRD SAT DOWN IN FRONT OF THE PATROL CAR. OTHER DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED ON THE DORCHESTER HOTEL, WHERE AN INDEPENDENCE DAY DINNER WAS BEING HELD.

POLICE STOOD BY AT THE EMBASSY, IN GROSVENOR SQUARE, FOLLOWING YESTERDAY'S CLASHES IN WHICH 27 PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED. BUT TODAY THE SITUATION WAS RELATIVELY PEACEFUL. IN ADDITION TO THE INCIDENTS IN FRONT OF THE BUILDING, ANOTHER PACIFIST GATE-CRASHED A RECEPTION GIVEN BY THE AMBASSADOR INSIDE.

HAVING MADE THEIR PROTEST AT THE EMBASSY, THE DEMONSTRATORS SET OUT FOR THE DORCHESTER IN PARK LANE. THE PROTEST --- ORGANISED BY TWO PACIFIST ORGANISATION --- WAS DIRECTED MAINLY AT THE AMERICAN BOMBING RAIDS ON THE OIL DUMPS AT HANOI AND HAIPHONG. THERE WERE NON FURTHER INCIDENTS, ALTHOUGH POLICE HAD A BUSY TIME CONTROLLING THE PROCESSION AND THE RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC.

(OTHER DEMONSTRATIONS WERE HELD IN A NUMBER OF EUROPEAN CITIES -- PARIS, COPENHAGEN AND FRANKFURT, AMONG THEM. THEY FOLLOW A RASH OF PROTESTS IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD).
