    GIMONDI, WINNER OF THE TOUR DE FRANCE IN 1965 AND THE PRE-RACE FAVOURITE, WON A SPRINT FINISH FROM THE SPANIARD, JULIO JIMENEZ, AFTER THE TWO HAD LEFT THEIR RIVALS FAR BEHIND ON GILIBIER MOUNTAIN.

    THEY FINISHED THREE MINUTES AHEAD OF A SECOND GROUP OF FOUR RIDERS, INCLUDING ROGER PINGEON OF FRANCE.

    DESPITE FINISHING FIFTH TODAY, PINGEON RETAINS THE YELLOW JERSEY AS THE RACE LEADER. OVERALL, HE IS NOW FOUR MINUTES AHEAD OF HIS NEAREST RIVAL. GIMONDI JUMPED FROM OVERALL 31ST TO FIFTH BECAUSE OF TODAY'S WIN. JIMENEZ IS THIRD.

    THERE ARE STILL 12 STAGES TO GO IN THE 3,000 MILE (4,800 KILOMETRE) RACE, WHICH FINISHED IN PARIS ON JULY 23.
