  • Description

THE EIGHT EUROPEAN FIELD AND TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS CONTINUED IN BUDAPEST TODAY (WEDNESDAY) WITH A SPECTACULAR DOUBLE TRIUMPH FOR POLAND AND A LAST MINUTE VICTORY FOR THE UNITED KINGDOM.

IN THE FINAL OF THE MEN'S 400 METRE SPRINT, FOUR RUNNERS FINISHED IN A LINE AND IT TOOK THE CAMERA TO DECIDE THAT WIESLAW MANIAK OF POLAND HAD WON BY A FRACTION FROM THE FAVOURITE, ROGER BAMBUCK OF FRANCE. CLAUDE PIQUEMAL, ALSO OF FRANCE, WAS A CLOSE THIRD. THEY WERE ALL GIVEN A TIME OF 10.5 SECONDS.

IN THE WOMEN'S EVENT, IT WAS BLONDE EWA KLOBUKOWSKA WHO RAN THE FASTEST 100 METRES FOR POLAND. SECOND WAS HER TEAM-MATE, IRINA KIRSZENSTEIN, AND THEY BOTH CLOCKED 11.5 SECONDS.

THE SURPRISE OF THE DAY CAME WHEN LYNN DAVIES WON THE LONG JUMP FINALS FOR BRITAIN. HE BATTLED HIS OLD RIVAL, IGOR TER-OVERNESIAN OF THE SOVIET UNION, AND AFTER FIVE JUMPS SEEMED TO HAVE BEEN OUTCLASSED. BUT THEN AT THE SIXTH LEAP DAVIES REPEATED HIS TOKYO OLYMPICS PERFORMANCE TO BECOME EUROPEAN CHAMPION WITH A JUMP OF 7.98 METRES.
