  • Description

The United Nations Secretary General, Kurt Waldheim, arrived in Rome, Italy, on Monday (4 November) to attend the first World Food Conference.

Mr. Waldheim spoke to newsmen at Fiumigino Airport, saying that the aim of the Conference was "to find just solutions to resolve the problems inherent in the shortage of food in the world".

Mr. Waldheim said that in his view there were two main solutions to world food problems:
"The increase of production of agricultural land in favour of developing countries which are suffering most from lack of food.

And the hoped-for creation of an international organ, a food bank, which would be able adequately to support the countries that mostly find themselves in difficulty."
The oil crisis, a string of harvest failures and the continuing population explosion are just some of the factors the Conference will have to consider. These and others have added up to a world food crisis of alarming proportions.
