    A SOLEMN CEREMONY AT ST. PETER'S, ROME, YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) IN WHICH 24 ROMAN CATHOLIC MARTYRS KILLED DURING A RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION IN KOREA IN 1866 WERE BEATIFIED BY POPE PAUL, WAS FOLLOWED BY A PRESENTATION BY THE POPE TO OVER 400 MISSIONARIES WHO WERE LEAVING FOR KOREA AND THE MIDDLE EAST.

    THE MARTYRS WHO DIED IN THE KOREAN PERSECUTION WERE SEVEN FRENCH MISSIONARIES AND 17 KOREAN CONVERTS TO CHRISTIANITY.

    PROMINENT AMONG YESTERDAY'S CONGREGATION WERE KOREAN PRELATES, CLERGY AND SISTERS. THE POPE STOPPED TO TALK WITH MANY OF THEM.

    IN HIS ADDRESS THE POPE SPOKE ABOUT THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE BEATIFICATION, WHICH IS OFTEN THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS CANONISATION OF A SAINT OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH.
