  • Description

Traditional dances, dating back many hundreds of years, were performed May 14 in the heart of busy London by dancers from all parts of Britain, dressed in replicas of Medieval costumes.

Complete with hobby horses and clowns to add a comic note to their performance, they were watched by large crowds in the shadows of Westminster Abbey Sanctuary, and later when they moved to St. Martins in the Fields.

Organised by the British Folk Dance Society, these dancers were participating in an annual display as part of a campaign to keep alive the traditional entertainments of 'Merrie England'.

Kept alive by the enthusiasms of students and artisans, these dances which otherwise might have perished in the advance of civilization, are now preserved from extinction and their colourful performance delights the eye of foreign and Commonwealth visitors alike.
