  • Description

The people of Congo Kinshasa are awaiting the final outcome of the weekend's presidential election which is virtually certain to give President Joseph Mobutu an overwhelming mandate for a further seven years. General Mobutu assumed power in 1965 after a bloodless coup d'etat. He was the only candidate in the election, and his re-election was supported by the country's only political party, the People's Revolutionary Movement.

The Interior Ministry has reported that the vote in favour of President Mobutu's continuing mandate is almost unanimous. The largest reported opposition has come from Louvanium University, where there were 157 rejection votes.

Under the constitution approved three years ago President Mobutu would remain the driving force in the nation's affairs, though a national assembly, to be chosen in a fortnight, would have some control over legislation.

President Mobutu and his wife were among the early voters on Saturday at the Ngaliema commune. They were greeted by hundreds of supporters. President Mobutu sought endorsement for a further seven-year term to continue his programme of reconstruction he began when he assumed power in 1965.
