  • Description

A freedom torch carried though Tanzania's towns and villages for the last two months was presented to President Julius Nyerere in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday (July 7). The ceremony was the climax of this year's Saba Saba celebrations to mark the 16th anniversary of the ruling Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) Party.

As the torch was being raced around Tanzania it passed through Jujamaa (Socialist) villages for the first time. President Nyerere later presented prizes to the year's best Jujamaa villages -- including tractors, implements, cows, and certificates for the headmen.

Accompanying President Nyerere at the celebrations were Zanzibar leader Sheikh Abeid Karume, Second Vice-President Rashidi Kawawa, and Secretary-General of the Afro-Shirazi Party of Zanzibar Sheikh Thabit Kombo. A visiting Guinean delegation, led by Dr. Lansana Beavogui, the Minister for Economic Affairs, was also present.

A light note during the celebrations was a drama group which played out the history of Tanzania.
