  • Description

The Zambian Ambassador to the United Nations, Vernon Mwaanga, on Friday (8 October) accused South Africa of sending her troops into Zambia at Katima Mulilo under the pretext of chasing guerrillas. On the same day the Security Council heard eleven speakers in a hastily- convened debate on Zambia's charge. The Council may vote on Monday on a resolution condemning South Africa for "violations of the sovereignty, airspace and territorial integrity of Zambia."
In Pretoria, the South African government denied that its security forces had invaded any foreign country in pursuit of guerrillas. At the United Nations, however, the South African Foreign Minister confirmed that there had been such crossings of the border, but attributed them to the winding nature of the river boundary between Zambia and South-West Africa. The Minister's speech at the U.N. is covered in today's production No. 11896/A/71: "United Nations: south African Foreign Minister attributes troops crossings into Zambia to winding river border."
