Background: INTRODUCTION: A young Sydney surfer, Simon Anderson, confirmed his youthful promise when he won the men's title at the Australian National Surf titles at Bell's Beach, Victoria on Sunday (17 April). The women's title went to the brilliant Hawaiian girl, Margot Oberg.

SYNOPSIS: The surf was flat and unpredictable on the final day, but the competitors achieved a number of spectacular runs.

Simon Anderson had twice won the Australian junior title but had no previous wins as a senior. He started a seven-to-one outsider but came through strongly for the title and a four thousand dollar prize.

One of the fancied foreign visitors was South African Shaun Thomson. He looked impressive during both rounds and finally shared second place with Peter Drouyn of Queensland. They split a 2,500 dollar prize.

The class performer of the tourney was the hawaiian girl Margot Oberg, who had already won a cluster of big titles before earning the 1,000 dollars first prize here.

Lyn Boyer, another Hawaiian, found the surf docile compared to the walls of seething water she rides back home. And though Lyn handled every wave she met with easy grace, she had to settle for second place behind her formidable compatriot. Altogether Bell's beach had never been mastered by such a line-up of surfing talent.
