    THE BROTHER OF DEPOSED CONGO PRESIDENT ALPHONSE MASSAMBA-DEBAT, M. GOMA DEBAT, HAS BEEN SENTENCED BY A BRAZZAVILLE COURT TO FOUR YEARS' JAIL FOR ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF ARMS. HE WAS ONE OF NINE DEFENDANTS WHO APPEARED ON SIMILAR CHARGES AT A SPECIAL COURT ON FRIDAY (SEPTEMBER 6).

    A LARGE CROWD PACKED THE PUBLIC GALLERIES FOR THE HEARING IN THE CRIMINAL COURT OF BRAZZAVILLE.

    THE CHARGES AGAINST THE DEFENDANTS INVOLVED HOLDING, SELLING, ACQUIRING, TRANSPORTING, STORING AND CIRCULATING ARMS AND WAR MUNITIONS. THE ARMS WERE ALLEGED TO HAVE BEEN STOLEN FROM SECURITY FORCES STORES.

    ALSO SENTENCED BY THE COURT WERE THE FORMER INFORMATION MINISTER, MR. ANDRE HOMBESSA, WHO WAS JAILED FOR THREE YEARS, THE HEAD OF THE COUNTRY'S SECURITY FORCES, M. BERNARD MATINGOU, WHO RECEIVED A FIVE-YEAR JAIL SENTENCE, AND THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE BANNED TRADE UNION CONFEDERATION, M. PAUL BANT-HOUD, JAILED FOR TWO YEARS.

    M. HOMBESSA WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FORMATION OF THE YOUTH LEAGUE OF EX-PRESIDENT MASSAMBA-DEBAT'S NATIONAL REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENT, WHICH WAS RECENTLY INVOLVED IN A CLASH WITH THE ARMY.
