  • Description

THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS WERE RETURNED TO POWER IN TODAY'S (SUNDAY'S) GENERAL ELECTIONS IN WEST GERMANY, ALTHOUGH STILL WITHOUT AND ABSOLUTE MAJORITY. WINNING 47.5 PER CENT OF THE VOTES CAST, THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS WILL SEEK TO CONTINUE GOVERNING WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE FREE DEMOCRATS.

SOME 38,500,000 VOTERS CAST BALLOTS IN THE GENERAL ELECTION, AND THEY INCLUDED ABOUT 3,000,000 YOUNG PEOPLE VOTING FOR THE FIRST TIME. ALTHOUGH THEY AGAIN FAILED TO WIN AN ELECTION, THE MAIN OPPOSITION SOCIAL DEMOCRATS RAISED THEIR PERCENTAGE OF THE VOTES BY ABOUT 3 PER CENT TO 39.3 PER CENT.

CHANCELLOR LUDWIG ERHARD'S VICTORY IN LEADING HIS ARTY TO VICTORY IS SEEN AS A PERSONAL TRIUMPH. THE 68-YEAR-OLD FORMER ECONOMICS PROFESSOR WHO SUCCEEDED CHANCELLOR ADENAUER TWO YEARS AGO NOT ONLY DEFEATED THE SOCIAL DEMOCRATS BUT ALSO INFLICTED A REVERSE ON POWERFUL ELEMENTS IN HIS OWN PARTY DISSATISFIED WITH HIS LEADERSHIP.

DE. ERHARD VOTED AT HIS ELECTORATE IN BONN, THE FEDERAL CAPITAL. WILLY BRANDT, WHO IS THE MAYOR OF WEST BERLIN, STAYED AT HOME TODAY WITH HIS FAMILY - FOR AS A WEST BERLINER HE IS NOT ENTITLED TO VOTE. WEST BERLIN CANDIDATES, INCLUDING THE OPPOSITION LEADER HIMSELF, WERE LATER ELECTED BY THE CITY PARLIAMENT.

THE LEADER OF THE FREE DEMOCRATS, DR. ERICH MENDE, CAST HIS VOTE AT HIS ELECTORATE IN BAD GODESBERG. HIS PARTY'S SHARE OF THE VOTES FEEL BY 3.3 PER CENT, AND IT'S EXPECTED THAT THE FREE DEMOCRATS WILL AGREE TO CHANCELLOR ERHARD'S REQUEST TO CONTINUE THE COALITION WITH THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS.

(THE WEST GERMAN NEWS AGENCY D.P.A. ESTIMATED TODAY THAT THE STATE OF THE PARTIES IN THE NEW BUNDESTAG WOULD BE: CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS 243 SEATS; SOCIAL DEMOCRATS 201 BEATS; FREE DEMOCRATS 48 SEATS; FREE DEMOCRATS 48 SEATS.)
