RAY: "After eleven years and fifty-three caps, he's finally decided to call it a day. And that he's survived, I think in this position, for so long speaks volumes for his adaptability. If the game has changed over these years, so has Gareth changed his game."

EDWARDS: "There's no doubt about it, that honestly I may be repeating myself. My one wish, I think every sportsman's wish in life, is that you may end your career on the top. Having this special award, has given me special significance in that light, and I should like to take this opportunity and thanks all those people who took the trouble to vote for me. I can promise you, I'm a very glad recipient."

COMMENTATOR: "Edwards finishing off one of the greatest tries of all time for the Barbarians. This try, against Scotland in 1972 though, was an individual effort."

Background: Gareth Edwards, the most capped player in Welsh rugby history, added another trophy to his collection in London on Thursday (28 September). Edwards, who retired recently as a player, was awarded the Golden Boot - a real rugby boot dipped in gold. This is the first time a rugby player has received this award. Chris Ray of the British broadcasting Corporation, as Master of Ceremonies, introduced Gareth Edwards.

SYNOPSIS: Similar Golden Boots were awarded to players from France, Ireland, England and Scotland, but Gareth Edwards was the most popular choice.

And here are some of Edwars???s finest moments.

The awards, which were jointly sponsored by a sports-equipment firm and rugby newspaper, were decided by readers' votes.
