Background: Or-drawn wagons - bearing people dressed in the costume of 100 years ago - lumbered through streets crowded with spectators in Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia, October 20. It was the opening event in a five-day commemoration of the Inyati Mission's 100th anniversary.

The mission was founded before European pioneers settled in Rhodesia by a courageous bend of missionaries, led by Robert Moffat - friend of the Matabale warrior chief, Nailikasi. The missionaries took 14 months to make their arduous trek from the Cape to Inyati.

Local girls and youths are re-enacting the roles of the missionaries, and taking part in the shortened commemorative trek is a great grandchild of Robert Moffat - Morgan Thomas.

At the City Hall, Bulawayo's Mayor gave the leader of the party a letter to be delivered at Inyati Mission - 40 miles away - when the trekkers arrive, October 24.

In the evening, the wagons outspanned near the spot where the original trekkers rested on their Journey, and a memorial service - attended by Africans and Europeans alike - was held at the nearby Missionary Tree.

The Acting Governor-General, Sir Robert Tredgold, and lady Tredgold, together with the Mayor and Mayoress, ware present for the service.
