  • Description

Lockheed claimed recently that their new Tristar aircraft is the quietest jet airliner in the world. The company says the jetliner is more than 50 per cent less annoying at airports than any jets now in service.

Supporters of the aircraft were facing two tough Senate votes on Wednesday (28 July) that may show whether they can get a government loan guarantee through Congress in the next two weeks. The Lockheed forces postponed a vote on Tuesday (27 July) on a key amendment because they either though they would lose or because the closeness of the outcome would encourage the opposition.

SYNOPSIS: This noise measurement van, at Lockheed's Palmdale Flight Test facility in California, is used to test sound levels on the company's new Tristar jetliner.

Lockheed says the jetliner is more than 50 per cent less annoying at airports than other airliners now in service.

The company says this is because of the new engines and new insulation techniques incorporated into the Tristar. There are still a rough few months ahead before the Tristar's future is confirmed -- one way or another. Supporters of the company were facing two tough Senate votes on Wednesday that may show whether they can get a Government loan through Congress in the next two weeks. The Lockheed forced postponed a vote on Tuesday on a key amendment either because they thought they would lose or because the closeness of the outcome would encourage the opposition. The amendment would give either house of Congress the power to veto a loan guarantee for Lockheed if it acted within 20 days of the guarantee being granted. The dates are significant because the British Government has called for action on the Lockheed Bill by August 8. They've threatened that if the deadline isn't met, they may consider cancelling Rolls Royce's contract to supply the Tristar's engines. Congress recesses on August 8 until September.
