Background: Honours were even at close of play on the second day of the first cricket test between Australia and England being played at Old Trafford in Manchester. In reply to England's first innings total of 249 Australia were four wickets for 103 when bad light stopped play about a quarter of an hour before stumps. The Australian bowlers, spearheaded by paceman Dennis Lillee, used the conditions well and the last five English wickets fell for 102 runs.

The Australian innings started dramatically as England's slip fielders dropped two catches off two balls in the early overs. At stumps Australia was four wickets for 103.

SYNOPSIS: England made 249 runs in their first innings against Australia in the first cricket test today thanks mainly to Tony Greig who made 57.

Greig was finally out leg before wicket to Australian opening bowler Colley who finally finished with three wickets in his maiden test.

Gifford was next out to a brilliant piece of fielding by Ian Chappell the Australian captain.

Australia began their first innings with a hook shot by Stackpole off the first ball of the innings.

England went into the test without a specialist slip fieldsman and paid the price as two successive catches were dropped.

Ian Chappell joined Stackpols after Francis was out, but the Australian captain was out first ball.

Watson was next to go and Australia finished the day at four wickets for 103 and the match was poised for an exciting finish.
