Boxing...and, in Thailand, the fourth King's Cup Amateur tournament get underway on Saturday (25 february).

SYNOPSIS: It was being staged in Bangkok, the capital, with teams from 14 countries competing for 13 titles. The team trophy, being returned here, was shared last year by Uganda and the Royal Thai Air Force. It is donated by King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand.

The first fight of the eight-day tournament saw the Ugandan light flyweight, Vinezil Ochira, matched with the Indonesian, Harry Maitimu. Ochira, in the dark strip, gave Uganda a solid start for the team title. He boxed well, and was given the decision on points. Ochira's punching power had been a telling factor in building up his winning score.

Later, two of Ochira's teammates also won, in the lightweight and light middleweight divisions. This made it three victories out of three for Uganda.

Uganda's challenge for the team title is expected to be strongly contested by neighbours Kenya, who are competing for the first time. They too had a fine start. Light flyweight Stephen Muchoki gave an impressive performance against Thailand's Samret Raungpan. Muchoki is one of an eight-man squad that has a lot of experience. Every member is either a past Commonwealth or reigning East and Central African champion.

Muchoki is a former Commonwealth champion and his ringcraft was too much for Raungpan who came under heavy pressure from Muchoki's left-jab, and right-cross combinations, before the fight was stopped.

Muchoki had not taken long to score Kenya's first victory...he over-powered Raungpan in two minutes. Another Kenyan was even quicker, ending his bantamweight fight after one minute and 54 seconds.
