  • Description

The second batch of missionaries expelled from the Sudan flew in to Rome (Monday).

The missionaries - 272 priests and nuns, and 28 protestants - were told last week to get out of the country.

The reason given was that they had been working "for the disunity of the Sudanese nation by misleading citizens and inciting them against their northern brothers."
All the missionaries served in the south where the Government is engaged in putting down a separatist revolt.

Sudan has been expelling missionaries for several years and in February last year 143 missionary teachers were told to leave. The few remaining in the south are expected to be expelled within the next few days.
