Background: Nigeria's Commissioner for information, Mr. T.A. Ogunlade, has called for third world nations to form their own news agencies to avoid dependence on western-based organisations. The Commissioner, one of seven civilians appointed to the government in March this year by the military ragime there, made the call during a three-day visit to Pakistan.

SYNOPSIS: During their stay, Mr. Ogunlade and his wife took time off from official business to visit the Folk Heritage Museum in Islamabad, part of National Institute of Folk Heritage, which houses a display of the nation's traditional craft-work.

In his call for a network of third world news agencies, Mr. Ogunlade said this was essential for the proper and accurate projection of viewpoints of the developing world. During his visit he also announced that the Nigerian national news agency, established last year, was arranging a two-way flow of news with Pakistan, which also has its own national agency.

Other nations, in promoting their own news agencies, should also have mutual arrangements with each other, said Mr. Ogunlade. His call follows a growing demand among third world nations for their own agencies. A formal proposal to establish a pool of news networks was made at last year's non-aligned nations' summit meeting in Sri Lanka.
