  • Description

YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCED THAT IT WOULD LEND THE VENUS DE MILO TO JAPAN NEXT YEAR IN HONOUR OF THE TOKYO OLYMPIC GAMES.

ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE TRIP HAVE ALREADY BEEN WORKED OUT BETWEEN FRENCH AND JAPANESE OFFICIALS. AUTHORITIES IN PARIS SAY THAT THE TRIP WILL BE LESS OF THE PROBLEM THAN THE RECENT SENDING OF THE "MONA LISA" TO THE UNITED STATES.

THE VENUS DE MILO STATUE IS ONE OF THE LOUVRE'S GREATEST TREASURES. SHE WAS FOUND ON THE GREEK ISLAND OF MILOS IN 1820 AND FOUND HER WAY TO PARIS. A GODDESS - SHE DOESN'T REVEAL HER AGE EASILY - BUT EXPERTS ESTIMATE IT AT A LITTLE MORE THAN 2,000 YEARS. DURING THE WAR SHE WAS HIDDEN, FITTINGLY, IN A CASTLE ON THE LOIRE.

ONE OF THE FRANCE'S LEADING NEWSPAPERS "LE FIGARO" TODAY CRITICIZED THE DECISION TO SEND THE PRICELESS STATUE ABROAD. THE PAPER ADMITTED THE STATUE WAS LESS FRAGILE THAN THE "MONA LISA" BUT APART FROM THE TRAVEL RISK "STILL MORE DISQUIETING IS THE DEVELOPING TREND TO SEND MASTERPIECES ABROAD," IT SAID.

"THE DEPARTURE OF THE VENUS IS INCOMPREHENSIBLE. IT IS MORE OF A PUBLICITY MOVE THAN A CULTURAL EXCHANGE," THE PAPER ADDED.
