  • Description

Silent lines of sorrowing Americans queued outside the Seventh Regiment Armoury in New York yesterday (Tuesday) to pay their last respects to General of the Army, Douglas MacArthur.

Among those to visit MacArthur's body was Adlai Stevenson, America's U.N.Ambassador.

MacArthur's body rested on top of a four-foot bier. It was guarded by one man from each of America's four armed services -- the army, air force, navy and coast guard.

Before the doors of the armoury were opened to the public, a brief memorial service was held. Cardinal Spellman took part in the service attended by MacArthur's widow, Jean, and close friends and relations of the family.

New York's Governor Rockefeller was one of many prominent Americans to pay his last respects. Today MacArthur's body will be returned to the Capitol Rotunda in Washington where it will lie in state till Thursday before being transferred to Norfolk, Virginia, for burial.
