    INDIA'S REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATIONS IN CALCUTTA YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) SIGNALLED THE START OF MORE AGITATION AGAINST THE DISMISSAL OF WEST BENGAL'S UNITED FRONT GOVERNMENT.

    CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE AND VIOLENCE HAVE BEEN RIFE IN THE CITY SINCE THE DISMISSAL OF THE GOVERNMENT BY THE STATE GOVERNOR, MR. DHARMA VIRA, ON NOVEMBER 21.

    YESTERDAY AS MR. VIRA, ACCOMPANIED BY STATE MINISTERS AND GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, TOOK SALUTE AT A MILITARY MARCH-PAST MORE THAN 50,000 PEOPLE MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS OF CALCUTTA.

    THE DEMONSTRATORS CARRIED RED FLAGS AND BANNERS CRITICISING THE PRESENT GOVERNMENT AND DEMANDING MID-TERM ELECTIONS AND THE IMMEDIATE REMOVAL OF MR. VIRA.

    THEY HAD TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THE LIFTING OF A BAN ON POLITICAL MEETINGS AND PROCESSIONS - TO COVER THE MORNING HOURS OF REPUBLIC DAY ONLY - AND ARRANGED THEIR MARCH TO COINCIDE WITH THE GOVERNOR'S FUNCTION.

    FROM TODAY (SATURDAY) THE DEMONSTRATORS ARE PLANNING A FURTHER THREE DAYS OF CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE IN THE CITY AND SURROUNDING AREAS.
