  • Description

The 36th Hastings, England, international chess congress opened Dec 28 with a record entry of 160 competitors - divided into sections of 10 players each - from eleven countries.

Alan P. Herbert, British author and poet, opened the congress and made the first chess move. For the principal event, the premier tournament, there are for grand masters - two of whom are from the Soviet Union - one international master, and five of the best young British players. The chief struggle for first prize of GBP100 is set between Svetozar Gligoric of Yugoslavia, last year's winner; Laszlo Szabo of Hungary; and the Russian ground master Ratmir Kholmov.

First to arrive on opening day was Kholmov's countryman, Igor Bondarevsky who shared first place in the Russian championship as long ago as 1940. Most European competitors arrived late due to the Belgian transport strike. The Congress lasts until Jan 7.
