  • Description

Thai boxer Saensak Muangsurin scored a unanimous points victory over American challenger Saoul Mamby on Saturday(22 October) to retain his World Boxing Council light Welterweight title. But there was contention in the American camp, which thought Mamby had won.

SYNOPSIS: The match was held in Bangkok and Saensak was obviously the favourite amongst his fellow countrymen in the audience.

The 13th round, and at times Saensack, fighting in the dark shorts, looked to have a definite advantage.

But America's Mamby seemed most of the time an even match for Saensack, and after the fight he said he had been cheated of a victory. Mamby's manager said it was the worst decision he knew of in his years of boxing, and added that he thought Mamby had won twelve of the fifteen rounds.

It wasn't the most spectacular of matches for the audience, and at the end as the fighters returned to their corners it looked as if the American thought he had a victory sewn up.

But it was not to be. Referee Abraham Echevarria of Mexico scored the fight 147 - 148 for the champion under the ten-points a-round system. Judges David Gilhooley of Hong Kong and Sakda Permkwandee of Thailand had scored 147 - 144 and 148 - 143 respectively in favour of Saensack. But the American boxer's supporters have said they will be protesting against the decision.
