  • Description

Monsieur Felix Gaillard presented his cabinet, the twenty-fourth of the Fourth Republic, to the Chamber of Deputies, and, on his 38th birthday, was voted in as France's new Prime Minister.

Thus ended a political crisis, unparalleled even in France, that had lasted for 36 days. The votes in the National Assembly were 337 to 173, only the Communists and Poujadists voting against him.

From the moment when M. Gaillard rose in the afternoon to explain his programme, it was evident that he had the investiture in his pocket, and the ensuing debate was in sharp contrast with those that preceded the downfall of the two previous candidates, M. Pinay and M. Mollet.

    M. Gaillard spoke for about 35 minutes in a quite and level tone. It was a speech of some ability in which he carefully avoided giving the impression that he was either an angry or an arrogant young man.
