Background: President Hafez Al-Assad has declared that Syria would remain at war with Israel until all occupied Arab land is liberated and full rights restored to Palestinians. The Syrian leader was speaking on Friday (8 March) on the 11th anniversary of the Arab Beath Socialist Party's seizure of power. Even as he spoke, there were reports of continuing clashes between Syrian and Israeli forces on the Golan Heights.
Speaking at a relly in Damascus University, President Assad added that since the October War the confrontati2on with Israel had become a political struggle, but this did not mean any relaxation of Syria's military preparedness.
He declared that he considered the current phase of the Middle East confrontation could be the moat decisive, adding: "It has been our destiny in this country to be in the vanguard of the conflict in defence of our territory and homeland."
