  • Description

At a press conference in Leopoldville, Congo, June 7, the Angola People's Union backing the Angolan rebels from the Congo, under Roberto Holden showed fragments of bombs said to have been dropped by Portuguese planes on native villages in Angola.

Holden self-styled "Commander-in-Chief of the Angolan Liberation Army" told the large group of foreign journalists based in Leopoldville that the bombs were dropped on "peaceful villages of women and children". He said that since the March 15 uprising, as many as 30,000 people had been killed, including thousands of children.

This press conference came during the four-day debate on Angola in the U.N. Security Council. The debate ended June 9 with a resolution calling on Portugal to "desist forthwith from repressive measures."
