Background: A requiem mass was held in Elisabethville, Katanga Province, recently for eight African policemen who were killed in violent ambush by Baluba tribesmen in the Malembe Nkulu district. Two Belgian police officers also died in the clash. At the cathedral were members of the families of the men who had died and senior Belgian officers commanding military forces of the Katanga authorities.

Other official representatives at the requiem included Mr Albert Kalonji, Premier of the breakaway Kasai Province, since appointed Minister of the Interior in the new Congo Government, and one of the Belgian diplomatic representatives in Katanga. During the ceremony the flag of the breakaway state was escorted into the cathedral.

Representatives of the United Nations are reported to have begun cease-fire negotiations between the mining state of Kasai and members of the Katanga Government.
