Background: TROOPS AND POLICE ARE ON CONSTANT ALERT IN GEORGETOWN, BRITISH GUIANA, WHERE THE STRIKE AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT'S CONTROVERSIAL LABOUR RELATIONS BILL IS NOW ITS ELEVENTH WEEK.

DAILY CLASHES BETWEEN STRIKERS AND STRIKEBREAKERS HAVE GROWN MORE BITTER DURING THE PAST WEEK.

FILM JUST RECEIVED FROM THE TROUBLED CITY SHOWS POLICE USING TEAR GAS AND HIGH PRESSURE WATER HOSES LAST THURSDAY TO BREAK UP A CROWD WHICH HAD INVADED THE MAIN OFFICES OF THE GOVERNMENT-OWNED ELECTRICITY CORPORATION.

SIXTEEN CHILDREN, AGED BETWEEN FIVE DAYS AND EIGHT YEARS, WERE TREATED IN HOSPITAL AFTER THE DEMONSTRATION.A STRONG BREEZE FANNED THE TEAR GAS INTO SOME OF THE HOUSES.

MRS.JANET JAGAN, WIFE OF THE PRIME MINISTER, WAS BEEN OUTSIDE THE RICE MARKETING BOARD THAT DAY AS ANOTHER GROUP OF THE DEMONSTRATORS SANG SONGS AND CLAPPED THEIR HANDS.

ON SATURDAY, MR.ROBERT WILLIS, A LEADING BRITISH TRADE UNION LEADER, FLEW INTO GEORGETOWN TO EXPLORE WHAT COULD BE DONE TO BRING PEACE TO THE STRIKE-BOUND COUNTRY.HE WAS SENT IN RESPONSE TO A REQUEST BY THE BRITISH GUIANA TRADE UNION COUNCIL.

(MORE RIOTING BROKE OUT YESTERDAY MORNING (MONDAY) ON THE COAST TO THE EAST OF GEORGETOWN IN THE AREA OF CONTROSE, WHERE SEVEN POLICE WERE ASSAULTED ON SUNDAY NIGHT AFTER THE RAPING AND ROBBING OF A GIRL OF 18 IN AN INDIAN VILLAGE.
