    MORE THAN 2,000 DEMONSTRATORS GATHERED OUTSIDE THE GREEK EMBASSY IN ROME YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) TO PROTEST AGAINST THE DEATH SENTENCE PASSED LAST SUNDAY (NOVEMBER 19) ON ALEXANDROS PANAGOULIS, THE GREEK ARMY DESERTER, FOR PLOTTING THE OVERTHROW OF THE MILITARY REGIME AND ATTEMPTING TO ASSASSINATE PRIME MINISTER GEORGES PAPADOPOULOS.

    AT THE HEARING OF THE MILITARY TRIBUNAL WHICH PASSED SENTENCE ON HIM PANAGOULIS ASKED FOR THE DEATH SENTENCE SO THAT HIS STAND AGAINST THE REGIME WOULD BE JUSTIFIED. HE REFUSED TO ASK FOR EITHER A PARDON OR A STAY OF EXECUTION.

    THE ROME DEMONSTRATORS CLASHED WITH POLICE AND A NUMBER OF PEOPLE WERE INJURED. SIMILAR DEMONSTRATIONS WERE HELD IN LONDON AND OTHER CAPITALS.
