  • Description

In Switzerland, talks on the future of Namibia have reached an important stage. On Thursday (15 November) South Africa -- which had been boycotting the talks -- began to investigate United Nations plans for protecting Namibia from outside interference. The U.N. plans are designed to avoid foreign influence over the territory as it nears independence.

SYNOPSIS: The talks are taking place in Geneva, where South Africa and political parties from inside Namibia joined the conference on Wednesday after boycotting them for two days.

Five of the African front-line states, five Western countries and the South African People's Organisation are the other parties to the talks. SWAPO is fighting a guerrilla war against security forces from South Africa, which rules Namibia under a disputed United Nations mandate.

The delegates are discussing U.N. proposals for a demilitarised zone along Namibia's borders with Angola and Zambia.
