Background: The French General Election campaign officially opened on Monday (20 February), and on Tuesday (21 February) the Mayor of Paris, Jacques Chirac, the leader of the Rassemblement for the Republic (RRP), the re-formed Gaullist party, was out meeting voters in the centre of the French capital. The elections for the National Assembly are on March the 12th and the 19th, and opinion polls suggest that the Opposition Left will beat the conservative forces, which have ruled France for 20 years.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Chirac, who is 46, was Prime Minister of France from 1974 until he resigned in August 1976. He became leader of the Rassemblement for the Republic in December the same year.

Mr. Chirac was elected Mayor of Paris in March last year, and earlier this month an estimated 100,000 flag waving Gaullists gave him a hero's welcome at a rally at the Porte de Pantin, on the northern fringe of the French capital.

Paris has 31 constituencies and there as elsewhere, voters have been left bewildered by feuds and shifts among nominal allies, not only among the opposition Left parties, but also in the Centre-Right. Non Gaullist candidates are standing against RRP candidates, and this has provoked strong criticism from Mr. chirac.
