INTRODUCTION: Thousands of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or the Mormon church, gathered in the Bolivian capital of La Paz on Thursday (3 March).

SYNOPSIS: The Mormon faith is rapidly growing in Bolivia and the adherents now number more than 11,000. The church was first established three years ago. thursday's conference was one of a series held throughout South America in recent weeks.

The Mormons don't claim to follow a new religion, but they regard it is a restoration of the one and only gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. It was founded in western New York in the United States in 1820 by Joseph Smith who was then 14-year-old. The followers accept the Bible and the Book of Mormon as their scriptures. The latter was first published in 1830. Territorially the church holds world-wide jurisdiction, but it's most intensively organised in the United States, and its headquarters are in Salt Lake City.
