  • Description

President Anwar Sadat of Egypt has warned Arab nations that civil war among themselves was the only alternative to co-ordinating their attitudes towards a Middle East settlement.

President Sadat was speaking in Cairo on Tuesday (23 July) at a rally to mark the 22nd. anniversary of the overthrow of the monarchy in Egypt.

The major theme of his 55-minute speech to an invited audience of leading political and military figures was the importance of the Arabs agreeing among themselves.

He told his fellow-Arabs that they must put even the most bitter memories behind them unless Israel was to make use of differences among them. The only alternative to such co-ordination, he added, was Arab civil war which would put Israel's mind at rest and relieve it from confrontation.

However, President Sadat added a warning to Israel saying the resumption of hostilities was always the inescapable solution if the path was not genuinely opened for peace and if all Arab rights were not restored within an acceptable time.

In other points raised during his speech, President Sadat said he was keen to put an end ot misunderstanding with the Soviet Union and he defended his "open door" economic policy which allows western investment in Egypt's developing economy.
