Background: There was a memorial service in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Tuesday (22 June), for the eleven Israeli athletes murdered by Arab guerrillas at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

SYNOPSIS: The Square of Eleven, built in a fashionable part of the city to commemorate those who died, was opened during the Tel Aviv ceremony. Boas Shapira, the son of one of the victims, was given the honour of lighting the memorial flame. Watching the moving ceremony from the middle aisle were the families of those killed.

Representing the government was Minister of Education, sport and Culture, Aharon Yadlin, who laid the first wreath. Part of the memorial included a statue depicting the powers of light against the powers of darkness. Next to lay a wreath was Tel Aviv's Mayor, Sholomo Lahat, then two members of the Olympic committee. After the recitation of the prayer for the dead Mayor Lahat addressed the crowd.

And as those in Israel mourned their dead many no doubt cast their minds back to the Olympic village in Munich, West Germany, where the tragic events took place. It was here that in the early hours of the 5th of September 1972, eight guerrillas of the Arab Black September Movement climbed the fence, stealthily found their way onto the roof over the Israeli quarters at 31 Connollystraze, and burst in on those sleeping inside.

A film, called "21 Hours at Munich", is being made with well known American actor William Holden playing the part of Munich police chief Manfred Schreiber. It was Schreiber who met with the head of the guerrillas to try to negotiate the release of the Israelis who were held hostage for several hours.

Two of the hostages had already been killed and the guerrillas demanded safe conduct for themselves and the other nine Israelis by helicopter to a military airbase near Munich. They were then to join an airliner which was to take them to an Arab country. But when they arrived at the airfield shooting between German marksmen and the guerrillas broke out and one Arab threw a hand grenade into the helicopter - killing all nine Israelis. Five guerrillas were shot dead, and the other three captured.

Although newsmen from all over the world were covering the story there was a lot of confusion at the time. It is hoped that the film now being made will give the world the complete picture at last.
