  • Description

Crowds watch investigators probing the wreckage of Trans World Airline's Super-Constellation soon after its crash in a lightning storm June 26 killing all 68 on board.

The main part of the fuselage lies only 20 yards from a cottage. The tail fell a mile off. An eye-witness described the night of storm and death; "Torrential rain ... and lightning. I saw the airliner struck by it. First a wing seemed to come off, then the tail. The rest burst into flames as it plunged, hitting the ground with a great explosion."
The Super-Constellation's end came shortly after leaving Milan's Malpensa Airport on its flight from Athens to Chicago via Rome, Milan end Paris.

Rain hampered the work of investigation and ambulance teams but within 24 hours firemen and Red Cross workers had recovered the remains of the 59 passengers, a crew of nine and three TWA employees. Most of the passengers were American or Italian. Four were British.

This is the first major airliner crash in Italy since October 22 1958 when a British European Airways 'Viscount' turbo-Prop was in collision with a Italian Air Force jet fighter.
