French President Georges Pompidou and Mme.Pompidou left for Paris, on Friday (28 January) after a four-day visit to French-speaking Africa, during which they visited the Republics of Niger and Chad.
President Pompidou told Chad's National Assembly in Fort Lamy on Friday that Chad had emerged more united from its recent internal troubles and pledged continuing French aid to the West African state.
Earlier in the day, he visited an air base near the capital. There are still more than 2,000 French servicemen based in Chad, some of them acting as advisers to President Tombalbaye's forces in their sporadic battles with guerrillas in the northern regions of the country.
Mme. Pompidou spent her last day in Chad visiting a show. Native tribesmen gave a display of ceremonial charging on camels.
