  • Description

It is a statement from a spokesman of the Souther Association of Colleges, which found the University of Mississippi guilty today (28 November) of bowing to political pressure during the James Meredith integration crisis.

The association, with 388 college and university members in 11 southern states, did not strip the University of its accreditation. The association could have done this.

But it did find Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett of political interference when he took over as registrar last september and tried to prevent Meredith, a negro, from registering. The association accepted the university trustees' assurance that there is no such interference now and it put the university under observation and probation, warning that nay submission to political interference, punitive action or riots could cause a loss of accreditation.
