  • Description

RETIEF WALTMAN, OF SOUTH AFRICA, GAINED HIS SECOND WIN IN THREE YEARS IN THE NATIONAL OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP OF SOUTH AFRICA IN DURBAN ON MARCH 17TH. HE HAD A 72-HOLE TOTAL OF 281 TO WIN BY ONE STROKE FROM THE DURBAN INDIAN, PAPWA SEWGOLUM. THE PAIR WERE LEVEL ON 212 AFTER THE THIRD ROUND, BUT WALTMAN WAS ABLE TO FINISH WITH A 69 WHICH WAS FOUR UNDER PAR, FOR THE FINAL 18 HOLES AGAINST SEWGOLUM'S 70.

A BRILLIANT THIRD ROUND OF 67, SIX UNDER PAR, BROUGHT WALTMAN BACK INTO THE LEADERS, AFTER HE HAD TAKEN 145 FOR THE FIRST 36 HOLES. SEWGOLUM THEN LED BY FOUR STROKES. S. DAVIES WAS THIRD. H. HENNING THE DEFENDING CHAMPION FINISHED WELL BEHIND THE LEADERS.

IF PAPWA SEWGOLUM HAD WON THE TITLE HE WOULD HAVE BEEN SOUTH AFRICA'S FIRST NON-WHITE NATIONAL OPEN CHAMPION. BECAUSE OF HIS ASIAN DESCENT THERE HAD BEEN SOME DOUBT AS TO WHETHER HE WAS ELIGIBLE TO PLAY IN THE TOURNAMENT. HE IS A FORMER DUTCH OPEN CHAMPION AND HOLDER OF THE NATAL PROVINCE OPEN TITLE.

A LARGE CROWD FOLLOWED THE TOURNAMENT WHICH ATTRACTED MANY NOTABLE PLAYERS AMONGST THEM BOBBY LOCKE.
