  • Description

Some twenty-thousand Greek-Cypriot and foreign women -- carrying the flags of 75 nations -- tried to hand in a petition to the Turkish occupying forces in the port of Famagusta in Cyprus on Sunday (20 April).

They gathered 2 1/2 miles (4 kilometres) outside the town and marched on it demanding the release of refugees to their own homes.

This was the largest demonstration on the island since the Turkish invasion last July.

The protest was led by a group of eminent foreign women, including Greek actress Melina Mercouri.

But the women were unable to deliver their petitions. Their first hurdle was a United Nations' peace-keeping force who warned them that the Turkish army had mined the road just outside the town. The U.N. let only 50 of the leaders through to the Turkish line.

On arrival, the Turks would not accept their petition, and a group of the women sat in the road outside the town, remaining there in an all-night vigil.
