SYNOPSIS: September 3rd 1969... the ferry-boat "Knossos" arrives at Port Volos in Greece with deposed King Idris of Libya and his household who had fled Libya after being ousted by a coup. On Tuesday King Idris, who was last reported living in Egypt, was sentenced to death by a People's Court. The court which has been trying the 81-year-old Ex-King in his absence, pronounced a sentence of "death by firing squad".
After his arrival in Greece in 1969, King Idris spent some days discussing by telephone with various European leaders, ways in which the military junta in Libya might be overthrown and allow his return. His efforts to achieve this were unsuccessful.
Ex-King Idris had been tried on charges of corruption.... his exact whereabouts at present are unknown.
After the coup, and while King Idris was beginning his exile in Greece, Libyan military cadets took over the country's embassy in Athens and scattered or destroyed all royal emblems and pictures of the King they could find.
The cadets also changed the name of the building to the "Embassy of the Republic of Libya."
