  • Description

At the 1960 International Horse Show in London's White City, June 20 the young British rider David Broome on "Sunsalve" won the King George V Gold Cup.

The Gold Cup event - the individual jumping championship for men won last year by American Hugh Wiley - was the main performance of the third day of this six day Show. The Duchess of Beaufort, whose husband is President of the Show, presented the Cup.

Broome and "Sunsalve" jumped the only clear round in a barrage involving 12 horses - four from the U.S., "Huipil" from the Argentine and seven British representatives. The victory was the first for Britain in this event since 1953.

Twenty seven horses competed. The White City Stadium course included an elliptical wall at 5 ft. 6 in., 14 feet of water and a 5 ft. 3 in. gate on shallow cups, the one flimsy element - on an otherwise solid course - accounting for a quarter of the disasters.

    D. Barker on "Franco" (U.K.) performed a fine round but hit the oxer pole on the landing side of the last spread fence. H. Wiley (U.S.) on "Night Owl" hit the gate. "Stonepark" (U.K.) threw his rider, G.B. Hailes.

After the first eliminations, twelve horses came into the ring for a jump-off after gaining clear rounds. For this the wall was raised, the water jump increased in length and the fences reduced to seven in number. "Sunsalve" jumped the first clear round, which proved to be the only one. Seven horses shared second place with four faults each. "Sunsalve" is the only horse to have won both the King George V and Queen Elizabeth Cups.
