Background: The historic Alamo, where 187 men died in defense of liberty, has long been a memorial to the ideals of freedom. Thousands of tourists annually visit the "Cradle of Texas Liberty" in downtown San Antonio. It was here that Jim Bowie, Davey Crocket, William Barret Travis, and other s sacrificed their lives in a valiant battle. Visitors to the Alamo may now see the historic landmark in anew light. A new exterior lighting system has turned "night into day" at the Alamo, accentuating the Shrine's architectural charm and character. The new lighting, designed and donated by General Electric's Lamp Division in cooperation with the City of San Antonio and Daughters of the Republic of Texas, allows the Alamo to be seen in its splendour after sundown. President Johnson, in a congratulatory message, called this project a most imaginative and brilliant way of lighting up our glorious past.
