  • Description

During an artillery duel across the Jordan River between Israeli and Jordanian forces about a fortnight ago, the 'bailey' bridge built across the Jordan to facilitate traffic between East and West banks of Jordan: was damaged and traffic across came to a halt (except by means of the Allenby bridge further down the river). Jordanian army engineers, after securing guarantees from the Israelis thru' the International Red Cross that they would not be fired upon, have been carrying out repairs on the bridge with the threat of the bridge being washed away by strong currents and rising waters due to heavy rains.

Due to daily clashes across the river; the day I went down to film damage and repair work on the bridge, the Jordanian engineers were not working. Tension was high with Jordanian soldiers looking out from their sand-bagged position at one end of old wrecked DAMIYA bridge towards the Israeli position at the other end of bridge (wrecked during 1967 June war).

Further up-river: Jordanian soldiers were on the lookout for any eventuality; reporting on Israeli movements across the otherside of the river; rushing amongst the frontier village huts to take up their positions whenever a bursts of machine-gun fire or explosion was heard. This is particular village (end of roll 1 plus 2) has witnessed several clashes and was bombed by the Israelis both by mortar/artillery and from the air). It is now completely empty except for the Jordanian soldiers.
