  • Description

In Jordan, on Wednesday (17 November), four gunmen unsuccessfully tried to take over the Intercontinental Hotel in Amman.

SYNOPSIS: Jordanian government spokesmen said the gunmen belonged to an organisation known as "Black June". They began their attack shortly after breakfast, bursting into the hotel wildly firing automatic weapons. Troops and security forces trapped them in the upper floors of the eight storey hotel. About 150 people were in the building at the time. Explosions were heard inside the hotel. First reports said one of the gunmen was Japanese. Other reports said one gunman had been killed by another who ten took his own life as troops closed in. The end of the siege came about four hours later.

An Army Colonel announced that the Armed Forces were in complete control. Three of the gunmen were dead and one seriously wounded. In addition four civilians in the hotel were killed and at least 15 others wounded.
