  • Description

Talks have been held in Beirut between United Nations representatives and Lebanese leaders on the need for the Government to re-assert its control in the south of the country.

SYNOPSIS: The talks were held on Monday (12 February) at the Ministry of Defence. Participating for Lebanon were Defence Minister Victor Khoury, Foreign Minister Fuad Butros, and Prime Minister Selim Al-Hoss, while Under-secretary Brian Urquhart represented the United Nations. He asked that the Security Council resolution be put into effect extending the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for five months, and that the government restore its authority in the south.

UNIFIL forces in the south have found it increasingly harder to function without cooperation from the Palestinian forces and the right-wing Christian militants. Early this month, four UNIFIL troops were killed when their helicopter was shot down, and two others were killed in separate incidents. These deaths have made some countries reluctant to supply troops to UNIFIL. Later on Monday, Mr. Urquhart met with Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) leader Yasser Arafat.
