During a one-week visit to Burma, Chinese Prime Minister Mr. Chou En-Lai visited the ruins of the ancient north Burmese City of Pagan, near Mandalay, Jan 8.
Once a flourishing capital, Pagan is full of the remains of Buddhist shrines, pagodas, palaces, impressive reminders of the glory and rich traditions of old Burma. Chou En-Lai, accompanied by Burmese Prime Minister U Nu, showed great interest in the historic monuments.
The visit to Pagan and Mandalay completed Chou En-Lai's Burmese tour. He had earlier been to Rangoon and the Southern Port of Moulmein. After the Pagan visit, the Chinese Premier and his party returned to Rangoon for an overnight stop before returning to Peking on Jan 9.
