  • Description

CONDITIONS WERE REPORTED TO HAVE RETURNED TO NORMAL IN ATHENS -- CAPITAL OF GREECE -- TODAY (SUNDAY) FOLLOWING THE CONFUSION THAT CAME AFTER FRIDAY'S MILITARY COUP. SIGNS OF A GROWING RETURN TO NORMALITY WERE STRONG YESTERDAY, AND THE NIGHT CURFEW WAS NOT ENFORCED UNTIL 1 A.M., ALLOWING TAVERNS IN THE CITY TO DO THEIR USUAL ROARING TRADE AS CITIZENS OF THIS MOST POLITICALLY MINDED CAPITAL SAT OVER THEIR COFFEE OR WINE DISCUSSING EVENTS.

TANKS AND STEEL-HELMETED TROOPS WERE STILL ON THE STREETS YESTERDAY AND OVERNIGHT, BUT IN MANY AREAS THEY REMAINED DISCREETLY OTT OF SIGHT. BECAUSE THE CURFEW WAS NOT ENFORCED UNTIL 1 A.M. ALL OTHER ENTERTAINMENTS, AS WELL AS TAVERNS, WERE ABLE TO REMAIN OPEN -- UNLIKE THE PREVIOUS NIGHT, WHEN THE CURFEW WAS ENFORCED AT DUSK.

THE COUP IS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN SPARKED OFF BY ARMY LEADERS' FEARS OF THE POSSIBLE OUTCOME OF GENERAL ELECTIONS DUE ON THE 28TH OF NEXT MONTH BUT NOW POSTPONE INDEFINITELY. THE CENTRE UNION PARTY OF THE FORMER GREEK PRIME MINISTER, MR. GEORGE PAPANDREOU -- MAIN OPPONENT OF KING CONSTANTINE AND NOW IN DETENTION -- WAS EXPECTED TO DO WELL AT THE ELECTIONS.

MEANWHILE, KING CONSTANTINE -- WHO IS SAID NOW TO HAVE DISAPPROVED OF THE ARMY'S ACTION -- HAS SWORN IN A NEW CIVILIAN CABINET UNDER KING CONSTANTINE KOLIAS, AS PRIME MINISTER.
