Background: Rosemary Casals of the United States beat Virginia Wade of Britain, and Margaret Court of Australia beat Nancy Richey of the United States on Friday (11 September) in the women's singles semi-finales of the United States Open Tennis Championships at Forest Hills, New York. Miss Court and Mrs. Casals were to meet in the singles final on Sunday (13 September).

In the men's doubles final, Yugoslavs Barthes and Pilic beat the Australians Roy Emerson and Rod Laver, 6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6.

The Casals-Wade match was one of the most exciting of the championships, with Miss Wade fighting hard from the start, as she has usually done in the past at Forest Hills. But Rosemary Casals was quick and agile, and returned service well. She took advantage of Miss Wades initial nervousness to take the first set 6-2.

Miss Wade recovered to take the second set, and for the most part was admirably disciplined, giving in rarely to the fits of temperament which troubled her. She served well despite a strained back.

But in the third set Miss Casals made a bold and sudden challenge, after Miss Wade's concentration faltered with the long rally in the second game. Although Miss Wade did pull back two games, Miss Casals finally won decisively enough 6-2, 6-7, 6-2.

Nancy Richey of the United States faced an impossible task in the other women's semi-final against Margaret Court. The powerfully-built Australian completely overwhelmed her as she did the final last year, to win 6-3, 6-3, in only 40 minutes.

The men's doubles final on the same day was a ding-dong battle between the Yugoslav Barthes and Pilic and the Australians, Laver and Emerson. The struggle went to four sets, the Yugoslavs winning 6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6.
